Road Test Tips

Tips that will help you pass your road test:

  1. Right turn at a red light: you are allowed to turn right on a red light if it is safe to do so, provided that you stop completely and then proceed when it is safe to do so. Make sure  Stopping should be your priority before turning or checking anything else. Not stopping completely before turning results in an automatic fail.
  2. When you want to do hill parking make sure you signal and shoulder check to the right. Try to be withen 20 cm from the curb and parallel to the curb before you attempt to hill park.
  3. A left turn on a red light can be done from a one-way street to another one-way street provided that no sign prohibits the turn. Make sure it is safe before you start turning
  4. Make sure you check left- centre- right at any intersections or at any crosswalk were different road users can be crossing.
  5. It is very important to slow down to 30 km/h at the beginning of playground and school zones during School zones and playground zones hours.
  6. Be a defensive driver. Do a ground search, look 100m-150m (1-1.5 blocks) ahead of you, in order not to miss any signs or hazards.
  7. When turning right make sure you are one metre away from the curb so as not to make a wide turn. Make sure you go onto your designated lane.. Check left, centre, right, and shoulder check to the right for pedestrians and cyclists.
  8. Make sure you slow down and check the right-hand side of uncontrolled intersections. Yield to cars coming from your right-hand side, if any. They are usually present in residential areas.
  9. Going the speed limit and according to road conditions is important. If there is no posted speed limit assume the speed limit is 50 km/h. Going 1-9 km/h over the speed limit will result in accumulation of negative points. Going 10km/h over the speed limit, or higher, will result in automatic failure.
  10. When making a left turn at a solid green light enter the intersection ( about three metres or more depending on the width of the intersection). Make sure your wheels are straight, check for oncoming traffic , Pedestrians and watch the lights. Make your turn when it is  safe.
  11. Where there are two cars stopped at a stop sign opposite to each other, the one which is going straight has the right of way over the one turning left if they stop at the same time. And the one going right has the right of way over the one going left.
  12. When the pedestrian lights are flashing lower your speed to 30 km/h and stop if necessary( When a pedestrian is crossing).
